Suddenly I See.jpg

WELCOME

Above: Suddenly I See, (detail) oil on linen, 110 x 90 cm , 2025
Below: Self Portrait with Pigs, oil on canvas, 60 x 50 cm, 2025 Longlisted for the online Ruth Borchard Self Portait Exhibition 2025

This painting was made in rural Norfolk, from direct observation of a field of pigs. I set up my easel right next to the farm, and some of the pigs were quite interested. The late afternoon sky echoed the pinks of their skin. I later added the self portrait, painted from my reflection in a mirror.

Pigs have a somewhat human quality at times, and being in close vicinity to them can make us question our relationship with animals.

Additionally, the mood of the painting reflects the time it was made, when I was questioning my work choices and feeling a bit stuck and stagnant!

Resonance,

oil on canvas,

100 x 120 cm , 2025

This painting represents my Dad, who died recently,  holding his bagpipes in front of the Oslo Fjord, where he lived, with a reference to Edvard Munch in both the swirling landscape and the babies. Munch sometimes includes babies or fetuses in his paintings or prints of women, so I thought it would be good to do so with a man who helped a lot of them survive.
